3 MONTHS INTENSIVE RESIDENTIAL BIGINNERS COURSE

This full-time course is an innovative 3-month intensive one that is offered twice a year. One in April- June and another in September- November. It will help students to achieve strong wheel throwing skills within the field of contemporary studio ceramics. Students will be given an introduction to the world of contemporary ceramics. They will be taught about the broad spectrum of production skills, understanding terracotta, mould making, hand building, repeat throwing, slip trailing, slip decoration, clay making, glazing and firing.

LEARN

Clay Making
Students will get hands on experience with procuring clay from the land to
the process of refining clay in order to use it at the studio.

Wheel Work
Students will be taught to center clay, open & pull within the first month. By the end of 3 months the students will be able to make cylinders, mugs, bowls, lidded pots, pitchers, casseroles, fruit bowls & platters.

Introduction to Hand Building
Students will learn basics of Hand building techniques like pinching, slab work,
coiling & making handles.

Slip Designing
Students will understand the chemistry of Making Slips and how to trail it on clay.

Glazing
Students will get an introduction & understanding of chemistry of glazes & how to make them. Further they will be taught different kinds of glaze application to finally testing their own glazes.

Firing
Students will learn the physics of firing in an Electric kiln, Gas kiln & also Raku firing. They will be taught about how pyrometric cones will allow you to read temperatures in the kiln. By the end of the course students will be doing a minimum of 2-3 firings themselves.

6 DAY A WEEK 5, HOURS A DAY

The course costs is Rs 2,00,000 for the current financial year for the 3 months with includes your stay and 3 times meal in a day. (If interested you need to deposit Rs 70,000 as advance to book your seat, (Note:- advance fee is non refundable under  any given circumstances)

 

Each student will be provided with a kick wheel, tools and storage area. Classes will be from 10am-1pm and then 3pm-5pm Monday to Saturday, Sunday is a weekly off.

There will be a library of books on various techniques of ceramic art. Students can browse, ask questions and experiment with permission.

ACCOMODATION

Students will be staying at Shubham Sankhyan's home which is a minute’s walk from the studio. Having 6 bed rooms + 5 bathrooms (non attached) + 1 living room + 1 dining room + 1 balcony + 1 terrace the space is good for 10 students. Within this we have single and shared

accommodation. In the shared accommodation there will be 2 students in one room. Availability of single room depends upon student’s time of enrolment. You will be provided with all the requirements for boarding (Bed, Mattress, Bed sheet, Pillow, Cupboard). There will be one washing machine available for students use.

FOOD

Students will be provided with home-made meals 3 times a day

Fruits, Poha, Upma, Bread toast eggs etc
Lunch
Rice, dal(pulses), curd, salad, seasonal vegetable& fruits 
Dinner
Roti, dal, salad andseasonal vegetable & fruits
For Non Vegetarians
Chicken will be made twice a week for dinner 


In case if you wish to make your own meals then the kitchen will be open from 7am - 9pm. Students will have to buy their own grocery & make sure to keep the kitchen clean.

TEACHERS

Students will be learning from Shubhamsankhyan, who was himself a student under
Mr. Mansimran Singh.He has perfected his knowledge of terracotta clay and low fired glazes.

Shubham has also done glazing course at Anvi pottery in 2014 under Mr. Sandeep Manchekar.

2015 he did his first exhibition at potters bazzar in sanskritikalla Kendra.
2016 exhibition in Aurovile.

2016 He made world’s oldest board game in clay “Chaturanga” 
2016 exhibited at Anandgram

2017  Hadinstallations at Rakkh Resort.

2017 Had installations at INFNITEA

2018 exhibited at Sanskriti Kala Kendra. 
2018 exhibited in Ahmadabad.

Also we hire visiting teaches during the course.

THINGS TO CARRY

Several pairs of quick-drying old clothes, warm clothes (winter session), as well as
comfortable walking shoes.Carry at least one formal outfit. Unexpected things can happen at Andretta. The writer, for instance, was invited to a party in a palace, an army ball, and a house warming in a renovated monastery. Carry personal toiletries and medication (if you need it) as these might not be easily available, though Andretta’s small provision store does stock some basics. A potters apron (split from skirt) if students are unable to find it they can get theirs made from a tailor around here. A washing machine is provided but students will have to carry their own powder which is easily available in stores around. Based on the availability of house help. Students can pay the helper monthly basis for washing their clothes.

DAILY SCHEDULE

9:30am the breakfast is served.
10:00 am the class starts.
11:00 an tea is served in the pottery.
1:00 pm lunch is served.
3:00pm returning back to the pottery.
4:00pm tea is served in the pottery.
5:00pm cleaning up your wheel and the studio closes.

EXTRA CHARGES

For the finished fired & glazed products that the students make they will have to pay additional Rs 550 per kg. We do this to avoid any kind of blanket charges.

As we provide tools to all students ( if lost / broken will be charged extra for getting new ones ).

Any damage done to the property, students will be charged for the same.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Andretta village is located in the foothills of the Himalayas in north-western Himachal Pradesh. It is 12 km from the town of Palampur. Palampur to Dharamshala is 38 km. From Chandigarh, Palampur is 260 km/6 hours and from Amritsar it is 229 km/5 hours.

GETTING THERE

Air
Direct flights operate between Delhi and Gaggal airport, Dharamshala. From Dharamshala airport, Andretta is 45 km/2 hours by taxi.
Rail
The nearest broad gauge railway station is Pathankot, 114 km from Palampur. From Pathankot, a narrow gauge ‘toy train’ takes 7 hours to Maranda station, 2 km from Palampur. Taxis are available from both stations.
Road
From Palampur to Andretta, a bus or a taxi ride takes 30 minutes. Buses are scarce and routes change due to the weather and road conditions. From Delhi to Palampur, (via Chandigarh), daily overnight Volvo buses (private and government) are available. HRTC has daily buses from Chandigarh to Palampur.

The nearest government hospital is in Palampur. There is a Primary Healthcare centre 5 km from Andretta. Phone Recharges for prepaid SIM cards can be purchased in Palampur. Electricity is unreliable but is available for eight to ten hours a day.

TERMS & CONDITIONS

At Andretta Pottery, Students get the opportunity to perform various steps in the process of making ceramics. Students get the chance to make their own glazes & apply the glazes on their pots. Hence giving them actual hands on experience of the process. During the firing process, there is some variability and results can be unpredictable  therefore students need to learn to be detached from their work while they learn.
